Publisher: Springer | Pages: 86 | 2007-09-26 | ISBN 4431732373 | PDF | 1 MB
Biodiversity is decreasing at the fastest rate in the history of theearth, largely as a result of human activity. The sustainable use ofecosystems allowing maintenance of biological diversity is an urgentproblem that must be solved. Among terrestrial ecosystems, forestssupport the richest biological diversity. The interaction of humans andforests has a long history, but recent changes have been the mostdrastic ever. The rapid decrease and deterioration of forest ecosystemshas been caused by social, economic, and ecological factors, which mayvary locally but are common globally. The mechanisms causingbiodiversity loss through forest utilization and the results of thatloss of biodiversity are still virtually unknown, although suchknowledge is crucial to developing sustainable management strategies. The work featured in this book presents the results achieved by theRIHN project, together with reports on other international activitiesand related efforts, as ecologists, forestry scientists, environmentaleconomists, and sociologists share in discussions of the issues.
